Butchering Turkeys
So over this past weekend I went down to Sparta, WI to help my Uncle butcher some of his turkeys. This was my first time killing a higher level of animal -- I had killed fish before and crawdads, but never a bird or a mammal. I wanted to see if I was mentally able to take a life for food, I wanted to see how I would react from the experience.
When the time came, we handled the turkeys and chickens very humanely, and when I lift an axe against one I was able to take its life very naturally. There was no need for remorse or second thought, it was a job that needed to be done. Overall I am very glad and thankful that my Uncle allowed me to help him with his turkeys. He taught me some very valuable lessons over this past weekend that I will take with me for the rest of my life. Also, now that I know what it takes to pluck a turkey I'm thinking I might want to go hunt wild ones.
Anyway, here is a photo-set of my experience. Thanks must be given to Brittany, my wife, who took the pictures with much bravery even though she is a vegetarian.
