Dunno if any of you have ever read the book... fun book to read. The movie looks like it could be good so I'm a little excited but still skeptical.

I've been playing the World in Conflict demo and I've been loving it. It's like playing with micro machines when you were younger but instead of imaginary explosions you get fire and smoke rendered in beautiful 3D graphics. I went to Target today and saw it on the shelf for $50, and even though it's a fun game I don't think it's worth it at that price. In a couple of months the price will drop to $30 and I'll totally pick it up but for now I'll stick with the demo.
The multiplayer mode kicks ass and I could see this game being a killer LAN game. The demo they released comes with both a single player and multiplayer aspect. It only has one map but I'd love to play this game with you guys (as opposed to strangers). Please let me know if you are interested.
Here is how the multiplayer works: You get to choose one of four roles. Infantry, Armor, Air, and Support (similar to what you might find in a shooter w/ classes). The action is very fast paced, as there is no base building with economy to worry about, you just order your units and they are air dropped onto the battlefield for you to use. I enjoy being the infantry because they can take over buildings (like in Red Alert 2) and dig in against the enemy. In the demo there are two sides, the Americans and the Soviets (now you can see why I like this game, I love the Cold War setting). Both sides have similar units so most of the differences are cosmetic.
Here are the minimum specs:
-CPU: Single-core 2.0 GHz or faster
-RAM: 512 MB
-Graphics: 128 MB video RAM, DirectX® 9.0c-compatible
(NVIDIA® GeForce® 4 MX, ATI® Radeon® 8500, 9200 not supported)
Here are the recommended:
-CPU: 2.5 GHz or faster
-RAM: 1024 MB
-Graphics: 256 MB video RAM
My system makes the cut for the recommended requirements and it runs the game pretty smoothly (a little jittery at times for online play). Download the demo, and try it out. Also, give me a shout if you want to play on teh internets.

I sent this email to Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director at Valve:
Being a busy guy he forwarded it to John Cook, manager of online development, and a day later I got this response:Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2007 8:17 PMDear Gabe N.,
To: Gabe Newell
Subject: Gabe: Please expand gifting on steam.
Today is my friend's birthday and I thought that it would be great to buy him Portal. (awesome game, btw). I decided that I would try to do this via Steam because I had heard that I was able to gift HL2 and HL2:ep1 if I had already owned them. However, I found no way in which I could buy a gift game for my friend as a birthday present. Please implement this kind of system, it would be great! Then I could buy birthday presents for all my friends using Steam. I'm sure others would too.
thanks,
Andy K.
Yeah, it was only an email, but I love seeing this kind of personal response from a company that I love and it makes me glad to support them. Steam is a great service and it looks like they are making it even better. Support Valve, Use Steam.Sent: Friday, October 19, 2007 12:11 PMHi Andrew,

I'm working on that feature right now - should be done in a few weeks (too late for your friend's birthday, I'm sorry).
Thank you for the feedback
John.

I just beat it, it didn't take very long, and it was amazing. The writing was brilliant and funny, and the game was twisted in just the right ways. Highly recommended! Using the Portal gun was something that I've never experienced in a shooter before, it's bending my mind just thinking about it. I cannot wait till there's more user-generated levels and puzzles, it's going to kick ass.
So, anyone else try out Portal yet?

God damn, I love this game so much. It reminds me of my younger days, back when Lucas Arts actually made good games. I so dearly miss this game, I have the CDs but they are scratched -- they didn't work when I tried to install them... I wish this game was on steam or something, I would totally buy it. I love it so much.
